Chico Bridal Fair

I just returned from what has to have been one of the best organized and well-attended bridal fairs I’ve ever attended. Class Act Entertainment always does a great show. I was fortunate to have time to meet and speak with several new vendors and colleagues. It still surprises me that Northern California is home to such a robust professional wedding community. Since I’ve relied on mostly word-of-mouth advertising, I haven’t done a show for quite some time; certainly a lot of work, but more than worth the effort. If I had a chance to speak with you briefly and you have more questions, please give me a call this week.

Preference Chiropractic

It’s not everyday that I get to go into a doctor’s office and not have to either wait, or be nervous. But  today, I got to shoot all the interior images and portraits for the team at Preference Chiropractic. In fact, I learned that even if I had been a patient, rather than a photographer, I had nothing to fear as they specilize in new or apprehensive clients. Getting to know Dr. Candace, I would certainly trust her to fix me up if I do something stupid again, like NOT using a hand truck to move my large lighting kit.

Savannah James

Up at 5:00 this morning, loaded all the photo equipment and was on the road down to Chico by 6:00am. My shoot was at a very cool furnishings and interior design boutique called, Savannah James. I was glad to again be working with graphic design firm Farrell Design Group on this project to caputre the unique charatcer of this downtown upscale shop. Some of the lighting challenges here were to photograph products near the large store windows before I had to start competing with direct sunlight. I got most of the products shot but later did end up having to do a fair bit of flagging of the windows.

Lauren and Sam

Rain threatened the wedding of Lauren and Sam today, but fortunately they were able to move the whole ceremony into the reception venue which was a restored turn-of-the-century hardware store. A very cool location indeed! As a photographer, there were almost TOO many rustic settings to choose from.

California Family Foods

California Family Foods is one of the largest rice mills and marketers in the state. Their graphics and marketing firm, Farrell Design Group, hired me to provide an array of images for print and web design that captured their entire operation. From harvesting the product to the various stages of milling, to packaging and even some lifestyle shots.

Moosewood Turnings

Turning wood into beautiful, and functional, works or art is the passion of husband and wife team Todd and Pam Kelly of Moosewood Turnings. They make salad bowls and turning utensils out of exotic hardwoods that are full of color and texture. With many products, it is important to “face” its best side to the camera. With these gorgeous wood pieces, every angle had unique character, so picking just one was quite difficult.

Solar Sunrise

I’ve been following the solar array installation at the Sierra Nevada Brewery since it began in October of 2007 for inclusion in a documentary on solar energy in the north state. When completed, the rooftop array will be the largest privately owned array on a commercial facility in the country. This morning, solar panels were being installed on one of the few remaining roofs that still are not making power. But the crews from Chico Electric, the contractor installing the record-setting array, get going before sunrise. So that meant it was up at 4:40 this morning to load both photo and video equipment, get down to Chico, and bum a lift up to the tall roof by 6:00am.  The smell of hops while watching the sun come up over the Sierra Nevada mountains is an experience I won’t soon forget.

Joannies Cookies

There are few commercial shoots better than when the product is perishable and delicious. There were fortunately a few of Joannies incredibly scrumptious cookies that were “damaged” during various set-ups for the shoot we did to promote her new cookie line, and so had to left behind. I love my job.

Wedding album design

Lay-flat storybook albums with seamless bindings have become very popular in the past few years. In fact, they have all but replaced the more traditional enlargement-based albums. With this new format you have nearly unlimited creative control of how to tell the story of your wedding day and we are proud to be the exclusive provider of quality albums by VisionArt. But we understand that with this much flexibility can come confusion. That’s why we make it incredibly simple. All you have to do is tell us which photos are your favorites and we do all the rest. Once we have a draft ready, we send you a high resolution PDF file for you to approve or make changes, and then it’s off to the printers and binder. Plus, every album is custom designed – we do not use templates of any sort, so you know your album will be one-of-a-kind.

Kristy and Dane

One of the best parts about being a wedding photographer is getting to work with couples that are ready to try something a little different. Kristy and Dane met me  today, just a few days before their wedding date, and spent about an hour tromping around a bluff overlooking Chico to get some spectacular shots. After the wedding they even want to take me up on my free Trash the Dress session. I hear mud-wrestling will be involved. A post on THAT later!
